The Problem With Old Black Plastic Pipes

Installed in thousands of New Zealand homes during the late 1970s and 1980s, Dux Quest piping is now notorious for splitting, leaking, and bursting without warning. Because the plastic degrades over time, it’s not a matter of if it will leak, but when. At Watersmith Plumbing and Gas, we have successfully repiped countless homes, replacing faulty Dux Quest with modern, highly durable plumbing systems.

Why You Need to Replace Dux Quest

  • Prevent Major Water Damage: Dux Quest doesn’t just drip; it often splits open under pressure, causing catastrophic flooding to walls, ceilings, and flooring.
  • Insurance Compliance: Many New Zealand insurance companies will now refuse to insure a property, or will void water damage claims, if Dux Quest piping is found in the home.
  • A Permanent, Modern Solution: We completely remove the liability from your home, replacing the old system with modern, reliable piping that meets all current NZ building standards.

Minimising Disruption to Your Home

Repiping a house sounds daunting, but our experienced team makes it as seamless as possible. We plan the job carefully to ensure your water is only turned off when absolutely necessary. We treat your property with total respect, finding the least invasive routes to run new pipes so that any disruption to your walls or flooring is kept to an absolute minimum.

How do I know if I have Dux Quest piping?
Dux Quest is typically a hard, black plastic pipe, often with white writing on the side that says “Dux Quest”. You will usually spot it under the house, in the ceiling cavity, or connected to your hot water cylinder. If you aren’t sure, upload a photo to our booking form and we can identify it for you.
Can you just repair the leaking section?
We strongly advise against patch repairs. Because the entire system degrades, fixing one leak usually increases water pressure on another weak point, causing a new burst shortly after. Full replacement is the only safe option.
How long does it take to repipe a house?
This depends entirely on the size of your home and how accessible the pipes are (e.g., whether you have a large subfloor or a concrete slab). Contact us for a free site visit and we will give you an accurate timeframe and transparent quote.
